I’m hopeful for the Netflix show (since someone here said they asked Damon and he said yes it was happening - same person who got told the album would be about cults before we knew it for sure) but also not holding my breath, specially cuz the Netflix division got destroyed.Gorillaz are an English virtual band formed in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, from London, England. I really want them to get back to it, but at the same time I feel content with what they are able to produce now if that means more Gorillaz content. I’m a big fan of the lore, I know lots by heart. A bet the label after seeing the sales of DD gave them a lot more budget to do what they wanted to do, and sadly it didn’t turn the profit (also Jamie blew the budget on the first MV 😂) Honestly the app idea was great but don’t think it was utilized to the best potential.Īlso, perhaps a reason why they were able to go as big as they wanted during plastic beach has to do on how successful DD was. People communicate different now, everyone is in their phones now rather than spending time in websites like before. I agree tho in the sense it doesn’t feel as impactful as PB website. We also got the Murdoc Bot interactive storyline.

There was even that mini game where whoever won got something from noodle (can’t remember exactly but it was car related). The Gorillaz App, you could visit the ghost house and poke around like in the old website. We did got another interactive space after plastic beach. What's the point of being a "virtual" band, after all, if you're just going to act exactly like a normal band.

GORILLAZ WEBSITE THAT SHOWS THE STORY FULL

It doesn't need a full narrative going through every song and weekly updates, but I feel like Gorillaz is unique in that it is the only band that CAN utilize a story so they should tap into that more and let fans interact with their world. Sorry for the massive post but just wanted to voice my thoughts somewhere that might care, I see people complain about "Need tons of lore" vs "No one cares about lore" but I think the answer is somewhere in the middle. People who just love the music will get lore if they feel like it and people who love the lore will keep consuming their music. it needs the story and music to come together to keep people interested in both. There's talk of a Netflix show but the thing is i don't think that's what the band NEEDS to gain back it's old feel of uniqueness. No new studio since Plastic Beach was canned/destroyed (however you want to look at it). Sure the emails occasionally are still done in person as Murdoc and there are the "commentary" tracks now on youtube but it's been years and there's still no new site. Post breakup we've seen none of that "fun" in an interactable way. Something no other band has ever done or provided. They had an episode on f***** MTV's Cribs for god sakes. Then we moved to the plastic beach website and had an interactive little island game with a progressing storyline and the cool Pirate Radio segments. Kong Studios website which finalized in a countdown timer and the destruction of the studio. I know it has to be mainly about the music (they are a band) but pre breakup we always had something interesting to mess around with. And that is the world and story they were creating. A niche only they could fill due to being virtual and fake. Now where does that all lead to for my opinion? I feel like they sorta gave up on something uniquely theirs.

After Plastic beach they kinda went on hiatus and broke up until Do Ya Thing (Still can't believe that jam came out of a shoe advertisement contract) and by this point they had lost a lot of their hype train from their popular days and the money backing that came with it. They took off great and then followed up with Phase 3 Plastic Beach which everyone loves now and talks about the "lore" and such but at the time people kinda.hated it? Because a lot of folks went "What's this flute, island, nonsense? Wtf is a Donkamatic? Where's my rap?" because most people were introduced to Gorillaz through either Feel Good inc blasting everywhere (and even being in a DDR game) or Clint Eastwood. When most people think of Gorillaz lore they skip to phase 2 around Demon Days because that's when Gorillaz actually got popularized. I think it's less about the story changes and more about the content and presentation. I hear people complaining a lot about the way the "lore" or story of Gorillaz has gone, mostly since act 3 Plastic Beach. This is just going to be an opinion of mine on a divisive topic in the community and wondered what everyone's thoughts on it were.
